5.2 Reflexive Verbs

Reflexive meaning

Reflexive verbs show the subject acting on itself, often for routine: alzarsi (to get up), lavarsi (to wash), vestirsi (to get dressed), svegliarsi (to wake up).

Reflexive pronouns

mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si go before the verb: 'Io mi alzo,' 'Tu ti lavi,' 'Lei si veste,' 'Noi ci svegliamo.'

Passato prossimo

Reflexive verbs take essere in the passato prossimo, and the participle agrees: 'Lei si è alzata,' 'Loro si sono alzati.'
