3.3 Imperfetto vs. Passato Prossimo
The imperfect
The imperfetto describes ongoing, habitual, or background past ('was doing,' 'used to do'). Endings: -avo, -avi, -ava, -avamo, -avate, -avano (-are). 'Parlavo,' 'mangiavo.'
The contrast
Passato prossimo = a completed single action. Imperfetto = the ongoing scene, description, or repeated habit. 'Guardavo la TV quando ha suonato il telefono.'
Cue words
Imperfetto cues: sempre, di solito, ogni giorno, quando ero piccolo. Passato prossimo cues: ieri, all'improvviso, una volta, poi.
