7.4 Measures of Development
Why we measure development
Geographers use development indicators to compare countries' economic and social well-being. No single measure captures everything, so combining economic (income-based) and social (health, education) indicators gives a fuller picture. Countries are often classified as more developed countries (MDCs) or less developed countries (LDCs) based on these measures.
Economic indicators
GDP/GNI per capita measures average income but ignores distribution. The Gini coefficient shows income inequality (0 = perfect equality, 1 = perfect inequality). Employment structure matters too: MDCs have more workers in the tertiary/quaternary sectors, while LDCs rely more on the primary sector.
Social & composite indicators
Social indicators include literacy rate, life expectancy, and infant mortality rate (IMR). The Human Development Index (HDI) combines income, education, and life expectancy into one score. The Gender Inequality Index (GII) and Gender Development Index (GDI) measure gaps between men and women in health, empowerment, and economic status.
