5.7 Agricultural Production Regions
Agriculture Varies by Region and Climate
Different agricultural production regions develop based on climate, soil, topography, and market access. Examples include the U.S. Corn Belt, Dairy Belt, Wheat Belt, and Cotton Belt. Each region specializes based on comparative advantage — the crops or livestock best suited to local physical geography and economic conditions.
Von Thünen's Model Explains Land Use Patterns
Von Thünen's model predicts that agricultural land use forms concentric rings around a central market based on transportation costs and land rent. Perishable, bulky, or intensive products (dairy, vegetables) locate closest to the market; extensive activities like grain and ranching locate farther away where land is cheaper.
Regions Shift with Technology and Globalization
Agribusiness, biotechnology, and improved transportation have expanded and shifted production regions globally. Truck farming grew near urban markets, while globalization allows regions like California's Central Valley or Brazil's soybean belt to supply distant international markets, reducing the friction of distance predicted by earlier models.
