5.11 Women in Agriculture

Women's Global Role in Agriculture

Women perform a large share of the world's agricultural labor, especially in developing countries, yet they are often undercounted in official statistics because their work is unpaid, informal, or classified as domestic. Women frequently handle subsistence farming, food processing, and household plots while men engage in cash-crop production or migrate for wage labor.

Barriers Women Face

Despite their labor contributions, women often lack land ownership rights, access to credit, and agricultural technology/training. Patriarchal inheritance laws and cultural norms limit women's control over land and resources, reducing productivity and reinforcing gender inequality in rural economies.

Development Implications

Improving women's access to land, education, and resources (a focus of many development programs and NGOs) increases agricultural productivity and food security. As regions modernize, women's traditional roles in agriculture may shift due to mechanization, migration, and changing labor demands, sometimes increasing their burden through the feminization of agriculture.
