3.7 Diffusion of Folk and Popular Culture
Folk vs. Popular Culture Diffusion
Folk culture tends to spread slowly through relocation diffusion — traditions carried by migrating people who maintain close, isolated communities. Popular culture spreads rapidly through hierarchical diffusion, moving from large cities or influential places (like Hollywood) outward through media, technology, and global networks, reaching many places nearly simultaneously.
Types of Diffusion at Play
Expansion diffusion spreads culture outward from a source without losing the original. Contagious diffusion spreads rapidly through a population regardless of distance (like a viral trend), while hierarchical diffusion jumps from larger to smaller places. Folk culture often relies on relocation diffusion, where migrants physically move and transplant customs to new locations.
Modern Technology Accelerates Popular Culture
Time-space compression — the increasing connectivity from transportation and communication technology — helps popular culture spread faster than ever. The internet, social media, and satellite TV allow trends to reach global audiences instantly, reinforcing globalization and often leading to cultural convergence, though it can also spark backlash and reassertion of local folk identity.
