3.14 Ethnic Religions and Cultural Practices

What makes a religion 'ethnic'?

Ethnic religions are tied closely to a specific ethnic group, place of origin, and set of cultural traditions. They typically spread through relocation diffusion (migration) rather than active conversion. Examples include Judaism, Hinduism, and Shintoism. Unlike universalizing religions, they often lack a single missionary goal and remain concentrated near their hearth (place of origin).

Sacred space and the landscape

Ethnic religions frequently link identity to specific sacred sites, land, or natural features, reinforcing a strong sense of place. Hinduism's reverence for the Ganges River and Judaism's connection to Jerusalem show how religion, geography, and cultural practices intertwine, shaping settlement patterns, pilgrimage routes, and land-use practices like agriculture and diet.

Cultural practices shaped by ethnic religion

Ethnic religions often prescribe dietary rules, dress, architecture, and social customs unique to the group. Hindu vegetarianism and reverence for cows, Jewish kosher laws, and Shinto shrine design all reflect deep ties between belief and daily life. Because these practices are rooted in a specific culture, they diffuse mainly through migration, not conversion, keeping the religion geographically concentrated.
