2.9 Barriers to Migration

Physical barriers to migration

Physical barriers are natural features that make migration difficult, such as mountains, deserts, oceans, and rivers. These landscapes slow or block movement, forcing migrants to find alternate routes. Historically, physical barriers shaped migration patterns by limiting where large groups could realistically settle or pass through, such as the Sahara Desert or the Himalayas.

Political and cultural barriers

Political barriers include border walls, checkpoints, visa requirements, and immigration laws (like quotas) designed to control who enters a country. Cultural barriers involve language differences, religious discrimination, or social hostility toward outsiders. Together, these human-made obstacles can be just as powerful as physical ones in restricting or discouraging migration flows.

Intervening obstacles

Intervening obstacles are any factors — physical, political, or economic — that hinder migration between an origin and destination. Cost of travel, legal restrictions, and lack of transportation all count. This concept connects to Ravenstein's laws of migration, which note that migration is influenced by distance and obstacles, often resulting in step migration as people move in stages.
