5.2 Separable-Prefix Verbs

What they are

Many German verbs have a separable prefix that splits off in the present tense: aufstehen (to get up), anrufen (to call), einkaufen (to shop), fernsehen (to watch TV).

The prefix goes to the end

In a main clause, the prefix jumps to the end: 'Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf' (I get up at seven). The verb is conjugated in position two; the prefix waits at the end.

Common prefixes

Separable prefixes include auf-, an-, ein-, aus-, mit-, fern-, zu-. (Some prefixes like ver-, be-, ent- are inseparable and never split off.)
