8.8 Postwar Diplomacy
Rebuilding a Shattered Europe
After WWII, Europe faced devastation and division. The United Nations (1945) replaced the failed League of Nations, aiming for collective security. The Marshall Plan (1948) gave U.S. economic aid to rebuild Western Europe, while the Soviets tightened control over Eastern Europe, deepening the emerging Cold War divide.
Cold War Alliances and Division
Europe split into rival blocs: NATO (1949), a Western military alliance led by the U.S., and the Warsaw Pact (1955), its Soviet-led counterpart. Germany itself was divided into West and East Germany, symbolized by the Berlin Wall (1961). Winston Churchill's 'Iron Curtain' speech captured this ideological split.
Toward European Integration
Seeking to prevent future wars and strengthen economies, Western European nations pursued cooperation. The European Coal and Steel Community (1951) and later the European Economic Community (1957, Treaty of Rome) tied national economies together, laying groundwork for eventual deeper integration into what became the European Union.
