8.1 Contextualizing 20th-Century Global Conflicts
Europe Enters a New Century
By 1900, industrialization, nationalism, and imperial rivalry had transformed Europe into a tinderbox. Great powers competed for colonies, markets, and prestige, forming rigid alliance systems (Triple Alliance vs. Triple Entente). Militarism grew as nations built up armies and navies, while new technologies made warfare more destructive, setting the stage for large-scale global conflict.
Ideologies and Instability
The early 1900s saw clashing ideologies: liberalism, socialism, conservatism, and rising nationalism among ethnic minorities, especially in the multiethnic Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires. Economic competition and social unrest strained old monarchies. These tensions, combined with a complex alliance network, meant a localized crisis could escalate into a continent-wide, then global, war.
A Century of Total War
The 20th century became defined by total war — conflicts mobilizing entire societies, economies, and populations. World War I (1914–1918) and World War II (1939–1945) reshaped borders, destroyed empires, and caused unprecedented casualties. Between and after these wars, ideological struggles like fascism, communism, and democracy competed for dominance, culminating in the Cold War's global rivalry.
