1.10 Technological Advances and the Age of Exploration
New Tools Made Exploration Possible
European sailors gained new navigational technologies borrowed and adapted from other cultures: the astrolabe and magnetic compass for direction, and the caravel, a fast, maneuverable ship with improved sails, for long ocean voyages. Improved cartography (mapmaking), including the portolan chart, helped sailors track routes. These advances let explorers venture beyond the Mediterranean into the Atlantic Ocean.Printing press knowledge and translated Arabic/Greek texts also spread navigational science across Europe.
Motives Driving Exploration
Europeans sought new trade routes to Asia to bypass Ottoman-controlled land routes and Italian trade monopolies, aiming to profit from the spice trade. Religious motives included spreading Christianity and competing with Islam. Monarchs like those of Portugal and Spain funded voyages for wealth, prestige, and power, driven by the emerging concept of mercantilism and national rivalry.
Portugal and Spain Lead the Way
Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal sponsored exploration down Africa's coast, seeking gold and a sea route to Asia. Bartolomeu Dias rounded the Cape of Good Hope, and Vasco da Gama reached India. Spain, following Columbus's 1492 voyage, competed for territory, leading to the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494), which divided newly claimed lands between Spain and Portugal.
