8.14 Noise, Light, and Visual Pollution

Noise pollution disrupts life

Noise pollution is unwanted or harmful sound from sources like traffic, industry, and airports. It can cause hearing loss, stress, and sleep disruption in humans, and disrupts animal communication, mating calls, and predator-prey detection in wildlife, sometimes causing species to abandon habitats near loud areas.

Light pollution alters ecosystems

Light pollution is excess artificial light at night from streetlights, buildings, and cities. It disrupts circadian rhythms in humans and animals, disorients migrating birds and sea turtle hatchlings, alters predator-prey dynamics, and reduces visibility of stars (sky glow). Reducing light pollution can save energy too.

Visual pollution and mitigation

Visual pollution refers to unattractive human-made structures — billboards, power lines, landfills, or urban sprawl — that degrade scenic value and can lower property values or tourism. Mitigation includes shielded lighting, noise barriers, zoning laws, undergrounding utility lines, and designing buildings/roads to blend with landscapes.

Key terms

Noise pollution
Unwanted or harmful sound (e.g., from traffic, industry) that disrupts human health and animal communication/behavior.
Light pollution
Excess artificial light at night that disrupts circadian rhythms and wildlife behavior (e.g., bird migration, turtle hatchlings).
Sky glow
Brightening of the night sky from scattered artificial light, reducing star visibility.
Visual pollution
Unattractive human-made structures (billboards, power lines, landfills) that degrade scenic and property value.
Mitigation strategies for these pollutions
Shielded lighting, noise barriers, zoning laws, and undergrounding utility lines reduce noise, light, and visual pollution.

Try an AP-style question

How does artificial light at night affect sea turtle hatchlings?

  1. They are unaffected by light
  2. They head inland instead of to the sea
  3. They find the ocean more easily
  4. They grow faster on the beach
