6.4 Distribution of Natural Energy Resources

Resources are unevenly distributed

Fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) formed over millions of years and are concentrated in specific geologic locations, not spread evenly across the globe. This creates regions with abundant reserves (e.g., Middle East oil, Russian natural gas) and regions with scarce reserves, driving global trade, economic dependence, and geopolitical tension over energy access.

Renewable potential also varies by geography

Renewable energy potential depends on local geography and climate: sunny/dry regions favor solar, windy plains or coastlines favor wind, mountainous areas with rivers favor hydroelectric, and tectonically active areas favor geothermal. Countries lacking these features must import energy or rely more heavily on fossil fuels.

Economic and political consequences

Uneven distribution affects energy security — countries without domestic resources depend on imports, making them vulnerable to price shocks and supply disruptions. Resource-rich nations may gain economic and political power, while resource-poor nations invest in energy efficiency, diversification, or renewable infrastructure to reduce dependence.

Key terms

Why are natural energy resources unevenly distributed?
Fossil fuels require specific ancient geologic conditions, and renewable potential depends on local geography/climate (sun, wind, water, tectonics).
Energy security
A nation's ability to reliably access sufficient energy; threatened when a country depends on imports.
Best geography for hydroelectric power
Mountainous regions with rivers and significant elevation change.
Best geography for geothermal power
Tectonically active regions with accessible heat from Earth's interior.
Consequence of resource-poor nations
They often rely on imports, face economic/political vulnerability, and invest in efficiency or renewable diversification.
