5.2 Clearcutting

What is clearcutting?

Clearcutting is a logging method where all trees in an area are removed at once, rather than selectively harvesting mature trees. It is efficient and cost-effective for timber companies but leaves land bare, disrupting ecosystems that depend on continuous forest cover.

Environmental consequences

Clearcutting causes soil erosion since tree roots no longer hold soil in place, leading to increased sediment runoff into waterways. It also reduces biodiversity and habitat, increases local temperature and albedo changes, disrupts the water cycle (less transpiration, more runoff), and contributes to carbon dioxide release as decomposing/burned biomass stops acting as a carbon sink.

Alternatives and tradeoffs

Selective cutting and shelterwood cutting remove only some trees, preserving habitat and reducing erosion, but are more labor-intensive and costly. Strip cutting harvests narrow strips, allowing regrowth from adjacent forest. These methods balance economic needs for timber with sustainability, though clearcutting remains attractive for its low cost and high short-term yield.

Key terms

Clearcutting
Logging method that removes all trees from an area at once.
Effect of clearcutting on soil
Increases erosion and sediment runoff since roots no longer stabilize soil.
Effect of clearcutting on carbon cycle
Reduces carbon sink capacity and releases stored CO2 as biomass decomposes or burns.
Selective cutting
Harvesting only certain mature trees, preserving forest structure and habitat.
Strip cutting
Harvesting trees in narrow strips, allowing regrowth from adjacent uncut forest.

  1. It increases the forest's biodiversity
  2. It is the cheapest, most efficient method
  3. It keeps nearby streams cool and shaded
  4. It protects the soil better than others
