AP English Language · Unit 5: Rhetorical Analysis Essay
5.2 Structuring the Analysis Essay
Thesis in analysis
The thesis of a rhetorical analysis states the writer's purpose and previews the strategies that achieve it — not a list of devices, but a claim about how the text works.
Body paragraphs
Each body paragraph analyzes a strategy or a section of the text: evidence (a quotation or detail), then commentary explaining the effect and its link to purpose. Move through the text purposefully.
Sophistication
The AP sophistication point rewards essays that situate the analysis in a broader context, explore complexity in the writer's choices, or maintain a vivid, controlled style throughout.
