5.9 Safe Computing
Protecting Data with Multiple Layers
Safe computing relies on layered protections since no single method is foolproof. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) requires two or more proofs of identity (like a password plus a phone code), making it much harder for attackers to gain access even if one factor is stolen.
Encryption Keeps Data Private
Encryption scrambles data using an algorithm and a key so it's unreadable without the correct key, protecting confidentiality during storage and transmission. Strong passwords (long, complex, unique) and antivirus/antimalware software add further defense against unauthorized access and malicious programs.
Common Threats to Watch For
Malware includes viruses, worms, keyloggers, and ransomware that damage systems or steal data. Phishing tricks users into revealing sensitive info via fake emails/sites. A rogue access point is an unauthorized wireless network set up to intercept traffic. Awareness of these threats helps users practice safer computing habits.
Key terms
- Multi-factor authentication (MFA)
- A security process requiring two or more independent credentials to verify identity before granting access.
- Encryption
- The process of encoding data with an algorithm and key so only authorized parties can read it.
- Phishing
- A deceptive attempt, often via email, to trick users into revealing sensitive information like passwords.
- Malware
- Malicious software (viruses, worms, ransomware, keyloggers) designed to damage systems or steal data.
- Rogue access point
- An unauthorized wireless access point set up to intercept network traffic or steal user data.
