2.5 Insight from Data

Data alone isn't information

Raw data must be processed, cleaned, and analyzed to produce useful information. Tools like spreadsheets, databases, and visualization software help identify patterns, trends, and relationships that aren't obvious from unorganized data. The goal is to extract meaningful insight that supports understanding or decision-making.

Visualizations reveal patterns

Data visualization (charts, graphs, maps) transforms numbers into visual patterns humans can quickly interpret. Different visualizations suit different data: line graphs show trends over time, bar charts compare categories, and scatter plots reveal correlations. Good visualizations make large or complex datasets easier to understand and communicate to others.

Combining data creates new insight

Metadata (data about data, like timestamps or geotags) and combining multiple datasets can reveal insights not present in any single dataset alone. However, analysis has limits — incomplete data, small sample sizes, or biased collection methods can lead to incorrect or misleading conclusions, so results must be interpreted carefully.

Key terms

Insight
Meaningful understanding or conclusions extracted by analyzing data.
Data visualization
A graphical representation of data (charts, graphs, maps) that makes patterns easier to see.
Metadata
Data that describes other data, such as timestamps, geotags, or file size.
Why combine datasets?
Combining datasets can reveal new relationships and insights not visible in any single dataset alone.
Risk of small/biased samples
Incomplete or biased data can lead to incorrect or misleading conclusions.

Try an AP-style question

A survey about internet use is only posted online. What problem could this cause?

  1. The survey can't be analyzed
  2. The results will be encrypted
  3. The data will be too small to store
  4. Sampling bias toward internet users
