5.4 Supranational Organizations

What is a supranational organization?

A supranational organization is a body that countries join voluntarily, giving up some sovereignty so the organization can make decisions binding on member states. Unlike international organizations that merely coordinate, supranational bodies can create rules and policies members must follow, shaping domestic politics, economics, and law.

The European Union (EU)

The EU is the AP CGP course's key example of a supranational organization. It has its own institutions (Parliament, Commission, Court of Justice) that issue laws, regulate trade, and set a common currency (the euro) for many members. Joining the EU means member states cede some control over trade, migration, and monetary policy.

Costs and benefits of supranationalism

Supranational organizations offer benefits like economic integration, larger markets, shared security, and collective bargaining power. Costs include loss of national sovereignty, tension between domestic and supranational law, and backlash from citizens/nationalist movements (e.g., Brexit), who feel decisions are made by distant, unaccountable bodies.
