4.3 Organizational Structures

What is Organizational Structure?

Organizational structure is how a business arranges roles, responsibilities, and reporting relationships to achieve its goals. It defines the chain of command, who reports to whom, and how decisions flow. A clear structure improves communication, accountability, and efficiency, while a poor one can create confusion and slow decision-making.

Common Structure Types

A hierarchical (tall) structure has many management levels and a clear chain of command, giving tight control but slower communication. A flat structure has few management levels, promoting fast communication and employee empowerment but less oversight. A matrix structure groups employees by both function and project, improving flexibility but creating dual reporting lines and potential conflict.

Span of Control & Delegation

Span of control is the number of employees a manager directly supervises. A narrow span allows close supervision; a wide span promotes independence but less oversight. Delegation is assigning tasks and authority to others, freeing managers' time and developing employee skills, but effective delegation requires clear communication and trust.
