2.4 The Marketing Mix: Product
Product: More Than the Item Itself
In the marketing mix (4 Ps), product refers to the good, service, or idea a business offers to satisfy customer needs. It includes features, branding, packaging, quality, and design. Businesses must decide what benefits the product provides and how it stands out from competitors' offerings to create customer value.
Product Life Cycle
Every product moves through the product life cycle: introduction (launch, low sales, high promotion costs), growth (rising sales, increasing competition), maturity (peak sales, market saturation), and decline (falling sales). Marketers adjust pricing, promotion, and features at each stage to extend profitability or plan for a product's exit.
Branding and Product Mix
Branding creates a unique name, symbol, or design that identifies a product and builds customer loyalty. A product mix is the total set of products a company sells, while a product line is a group of related products. Businesses use product differentiation to distinguish their products from competitors.
