3.6 African American Religion and Choice
Religion as a site of freedom
After emancipation, African Americans built independent religious institutions like the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and Black Baptist congregations. These spaces offered autonomy from white-controlled churches, allowing Black people to worship freely, develop leadership, and organize politically and socially outside white oversight.
The Black Church as community anchor
The Black Church functioned as more than a place of worship — it was a hub for education, mutual aid, economic cooperation, and political organizing. Churches often served as the only spaces Black communities fully controlled, making them central to civic life and later, movements like the Civil Rights Movement.
Diversity of belief and choice
African Americans exercised religious choice, practicing not only Protestant Christianity but also Islam, Judaism, and other traditions. Figures and movements such as the Nation of Islam and Black Hebrew Israelites reflect this diversity, showing religion as an evolving expression of identity, resistance, and self-determination.
