2.19 African American Religion
Christianity Adapted and Transformed
Enslaved Africans blended African spiritual traditions with Christianity, creating distinct forms of worship. Many were introduced to Christianity through enslavers seeking to justify or control enslavement, but Black people reinterpreted its teachings, emphasizing liberation, Exodus imagery, and deliverance rather than obedience. Practices like call-and-response, spirituals, and ecstatic worship reflected African retentions merged with Christian faith.
The Invisible Institution
Enslaved people often worshipped secretly, away from White oversight, in what is called the "invisible institution" — hidden religious gatherings, sometimes called "hush harbors," held in woods or cabins. These spaces allowed authentic expression of faith, community building, and coded messages of resistance, distinct from the sanctioned, supervised religion enslavers permitted.
Religion as a Tool of Resistance and Community
Spirituals carried double meanings — expressing faith while encoding messages about escape or resistance (e.g., "Steal Away"). Independent Black churches, like the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church founded by Richard Allen, emerged as spaces for autonomy, leadership, education, and organizing against slavery and racism, laying groundwork for future activism.
