1.6 African Religion and Cosmology

Diverse but connected belief systems

Precolonial West and Central African societies held diverse religious traditions, but many shared common features: belief in a Supreme Creator, lesser deities, and ancestor veneration. Ancestors were seen as active spiritual intermediaries between the living and the divine, and rituals maintained balance between the physical and spiritual worlds.

Cosmology and community life

African cosmology often viewed the universe as interconnected, with no strict separation between the sacred and the everyday. Religion shaped social structure, art, music, and governance. Practices like divination, rites of passage, and communal ceremonies reinforced kinship ties and cultural values passed across generations.

Religious retention and adaptation

Enslaved Africans carried these belief systems across the Middle Passage. Elements of African cosmology blended with Christianity and Islam in the Americas, producing syncretic traditions such as Vodou, Santería, and Candomblé. These practices reflect the resilience of African religious worldviews under conditions of enslavement.
