AP African American Studies · Unit 1: Origins of the African Diaspora
1.4 African Culture and Art
Diverse and Sophisticated Societies
Pre-colonial West and Central Africa contained diverse, highly developed societies with rich political, economic, and cultural systems. Kingdoms like Mali, Songhai, and Kongo had complex governments, extensive trade networks, and centers of learning such as Timbuktu, challenging stereotypes of Africa as primitive before European contact.
Art as Cultural Expression
African societies produced sophisticated art, architecture, and material culture reflecting spiritual beliefs, social organization, and daily life. Sculpture, textiles, metalwork (like Benin bronzes), and masks served religious, political, and communal functions, often connecting the living to ancestors and spiritual worlds rather than existing purely as decoration.
Griots and Oral Tradition
Griots were West African storytellers, historians, and musicians who preserved and transmitted history, genealogies, and cultural values through oral tradition. Their role highlights how knowledge, music, and performance were central to African cultural transmission, later influencing African American storytelling, music, and oral traditions across the diaspora.
